As for the bbcode tag.. the reason we don't have is because it's a huge invitation for spam. We may think about this a bit, perhaps allow it for "experienced" members with a certain number of posts. But that may be confusing for new people.
Personally I think the best option would be that if the URL is over a certain amount of characters to shorten it and put "...". Then when you do a mouse roll-over it should show the full URL either down at the bottom of your browser and posssibly even have a little roll-over box show up with the full URL as well. Many other forums do this.
